"Resistance in Musical Theatre: How We Fight the Power Through Song, Dance, and Storytelling"
with Ciarlene Coleman

London is known as one of the top theatre centres in the world, and some of the most popular and well-known musicals on the West End now (i.e. Les Miserables, Cabaret, and The Producers) continue to entertain millions of audience members from around the globe, week-to-week. But have you ever wondered about the story inspiration behind these iconic shows? Real-life stories of war, resistance, and activism influence countless stories in arts and entertainment, and the musical theatre form is no different.

This presentation will cover the history of some of the world's most famous musicals all through the lens of the social, cultural, and historical contexts that fostered the characters and stories that we see on stage to this day. As the late great musical theatre composer Stephen Sondheim (known for shows like Into the Woods, Company, and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street) said, "Art, in itself, is an attempt to bring order out of chaos.”
