The Origin of Eukaryotes: the Most Important Evolutionary Event
with Aidan Pearce

Summary:
Where did we come from? Are we alone in the universe? Why are mitochondria the powerhouses of the cell? If you have ever wanted to know the answer to these questions you should probably know about the origin of eukaryotes. That’s because the origin of eukaryotes is the origin of us. It is the rarest major evolutionary event to occur and it is responsible for all of the complex life we see around us from plants, fungi, and ourselves.

This talk will cover eukaryogenesis: the formation of the cells which make up all complex life as we know it. This field of evolutionary biology touches on topics ranging from microbiology, geochemistry, and philosophy. I will discuss the history of our understanding of eukaryogenesis, how the environment of Earth started this transition over 2 billion years ago, and finally we will explore the consequences of this for life on our planet.

Bio:
Aidan Pearce is an evolutionary biologist whose passion for the history of life began with fossil hunting on the beaches of the Isle of Wight. He studied Biochemistry at the University of Warwick and completed a master’s in Human Evolution at the University of Cambridge before researching experimental evolution at the University of Bath. He is now studying for a PhD in Evolutionary Biology at University College London, focusing on the origin of eukaryotes. A lifelong enthusiast for evolution, they are always keen to share their fascination with how life evolves.

What is Pints of Knowledge?
Pints of Knowledge is a series of public talks where experts, researchers, and big thinkers share fascinating ideas all in the relaxed setting of a pub. We bring brilliant minds and curious audiences together over a pint, covering topics from science and politics to history, art, and beyond.

What happens at Pints of Knowledge?
At each Pints of Knowledge event, you’ll hear engaging talks (about 35-40 minutes) from expert speakers on fascinating topics — followed by audience Q&A. The vibe is informal and social, set in a pub where you can grab a drink, meet interesting people, and enjoy big ideas in a relaxed setting.
