Infection in the Movies: Finding the Fact Within the Fiction
with Elaine Cloutman-Green

Summary
From Outbreak to Alien. From 28 Days Later to The Last of Us. Infection is represented across films and television, but where is the science within the fiction?

This talk will explore the truth of infection processes, from diagnosis to vaccines, and how they are represented in the movies. It will discuss why outbreaks look different in films that cover the start of an outbreak, compared to how they are handled in examples, such as The Girl with All the Gifts, which is set within a world where an outbreak has become a pandemic and life has changed forever.

It will also cover my personal Science House of Horrors, such as the fact that no one ever washes their hands on screen, as well as how Alien would have been a very short film if anyone had listened to Ripley when she refused to open the door in order to follow protocol.
