The year is 1988, and the world is a very different place. In the United States, liberals are devastated at the election of a controversial Republican President. British nurses strike for higher pay and investment in a crumbling National Health Service. A global superpower withdraws from their invasion of Afghanistan.
At the birth of the digital age, huge mobile phones are starting to be seen in the City of London and CDs outsell vinyl for the first time. In the wider culture, Steven Hawking brings theoretical cosmology to the masses with the release of A Brief History of Time. The world is introduced to John McClane, Bruce Willis’ legendary Die Hard cop. Margaret Thatcher becomes the longest serving Prime Minister of the 20th century.
An astonishing year in music sees classic pop number ones including Kylie Minogue’s I Should Be So Lucky. In London, British soul and RnB collective Soul II Soul are founded, going on to secure huge hits with Keep On Movin’ and Back to Life. Whitney Houston, already a household name, follows up her unstoppable hit of the previous year I Wanna Dance With Somebody, with One Moment In Time, recorded for the 1988 Seoul Olympics. London grinds to a halt in July for seven sold out Michael Jackson concerts as part of his Bad world tour.
At the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics, a British hero – Eddie the Eagle Edwards – defies the critics to become the first competitor to represent Great Britain in Olympic ski jumping. He comes last.
This New Year’s Eve, we’re going back to a simpler time. A time when hair was big and shoulders were padded. A time when the future seemed impossibly close. We’re going back to 1988 – and you’re coming with us.
